Throughout the last 10 years the castle has been carefully restored by the current owners to its former glory where it is now used as a family home.

The splendid edifice of Castle, which dominates the skyline, is credit to the outstanding quality of the original and restored workmanship, and stands proud as one of the finest Scottish Baronial style Castles in the Country.

The Castle interior is outstanding opulent in character, yet maintains the warmth, charm and comfort of a family home. In 1875 the interior of the property was extensively redecorated by Bonnar & Carfrae.

Their exquisite interior decoration, which is still to this day largely extant, involved some of the most beautiful stencilled silk damask. By any standard, Ayton Castle is palatially furnished.

While Ayton Castle is certainly one of the Scottish Borders most impressive and highly regarded historic buildings, it might have been an entirely different architectural endeavour if its architect, James Gillespie Graham, didn’t have the wealth of older local castles to inspire him to create something worthy of the area’s prestigious collection.
